Q&A With Matthew

    Why St Andrews?

The philosophy programme at St Andrews is internationally renowned, attracting some of the best researchers from around the world. I wanted to be around the people that were writing the textbooks that I was reading, who could challenge my views and help me to refine my research skills. I also concluded that there would be nowhere better to study philosophy than a small medieval town in rural Scotland with its own beach, castle, and dedicated research library housed in a converted church!

What do you do outside of work?

My main passion beyond education is music, I have played the guitar for nearly 20 years and loved my time performing in bands - playing venues across the UK as a teenager. These days, I find myself listening more than playing and will attend as many live performances as my calendar allows! Recently I have also taken up golf as a way to spend Sunday mornings with friends away from technology and the email inbox.

What do you hope to do in the future?

I will be continuing to support local students with Crimson in the UK as well as in Ireland and Switzerland. My ambition is to see more students open their minds to the power of mentoring and soft skill development. As the job market continues to be revolutionised by technology, communication, and analytical skills are going to become even more valued by employers.

In the immediate future, I will be applying to MBA programmes in both the US and the UK and intend to further develop my understanding of how to impact structural and institutional change within the education sector in the UK, Europe, and elsewhere in the world.

I already knew how to get good grades and test scores, but it wasn’t until I met with my strategist sophomore year that I realized the importance of extracurriculars. I had just been in school clubs and varsity sports, but was able to start working on a non-profit that we integrated heavily in my application to Harvard.
